It is still too early to assess the real impact of an album which was released only in 2007, but I think nobody can, 3 years later, challenge the fact that MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular is a defining moment of the 21 century’s first decade’s musical landscape.
The first listening of gems like Time to Pretend, Electric Feel or the glorious Kids had for me this rare quality of unknown familiarity reserved to instant classics.
The New York-based duo, made up of Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, managed to create a wall of sound with its feet in the past and its head in the future. Many bands, from Wave Machines to Empire of the Sun, have tried to emulate them, some of them with outstanding results, but the New Yorkers’ effort remains unsurpassed.
I have the feeling that, for many of us, a concert by MGMT in 2010 might be as good as it gets in future tell-to-our-grandchildren musical stories, comparable to a Beatles gig in 1965 or by the Rolling Stones in 1970.
So fasten your seatbelts because MGMT is coming to Brussels. They will perform at ANCIENNE BELGIQUE on Sunday, October 3, at 20 pm. Don’t miss it. It can be a unique opportunity.
