2010 Golden Globes Nominations Predictions

The Golden Globes render the film awards season excitingly open-ended. The drama/comedy split in the Best Picture and in the leading acting categories paves the way to the acknowledgment of films and performers that would otherwise be ignored only because of their attachment to a genre which is shortsightedly but universally considered less worthy of award recognition.

This year, for instance, Emma Stone, who gives one of the most appealing performances this year as a modern-day Hester Prynne in the lesser vehicle Easy A, will most certainly get a nod in the Best Comedy Actress category, while she has (and probably will be) snubbed in other awards with higher highbrow aspirations. In that same category, the fact that Annette Bening (and probably her Kids Are All Right co-star Julianne Moore), ubiquitous in the Best Actress race this year, will compete in the comedy side will leave the door open to other performers in the drama category. I’m expecting Noomi Rapace or Tilda Swinton to take that spot. Moreover, the flexibility of the Foreign Press Association rules as regards the number of nominations usually provides for pleasant surprises (the sixth nominee effect), especially in the supporting acting categories. I hope Rooney Mara or Blake Lively, who deliver brief but powerful performances in their films, can pop up in that space.

The HFPA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) will announce the nominations for the 68th Golden Globes Awards tomorrow, Tuesday, December 14 at 5 am PST.
